Therapy for business owners, leaders and managers

Hi, I’m Cristina, a therapist and the business owner of Psychology Therapy. After eight years of working in the corporate sector, I decided it was time for a change. That’s when I began my studies as a therapist, and after qualifying, I launched my first therapy and coaching business. With such a background, it’s no surprise that I am enthusiastic about working with managers, leaders, and entrepreneurs.

I understand the difficulties that come with the job – pressures, anxiety, self-doubt, self-criticism, limiting beliefs, self-sabotage, impostor syndrome, high expectations, etc. – along with the challenges that life brings along the way. I get you, and I want to use that understanding to help you.

I will resonate with you if you:

  • You are an entrepreneur, business leader or manager.
  • You are interested in spirituality and the purpose and meaning of your life.
  • You are driven, ambitious and passionate about what you do.
  • You have a growth mindset or want to develop one.
  • You love learning, adventure, challenge and excitement.
  • You want to live a life based on your values and goals aligned with those values.
  • You have changed careers or are thinking about it.

My approach to therapy for entrepreneurs and business owners/leaders

My approach is based on a thorough understanding of the workplace, leadership and entrepreneurial challenges, combined with my knowledge of therapy and science and my passion for working with professionals like you.

The main therapeutic approaches I use are cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), combined with elements of compassion-focused therapy (CFT) and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT).

CBT is a well-researched and highly effective form of therapy and ACT, CFT, and MBCT represent the latest advancements in CBT, collectively known as third-wave therapies. These approaches introduce concepts such as acceptance, mindfulness, and self-compassion, which are especially helpful for business leaders and entrepreneurs facing challenges.

CBT is an evidence-based approach founded on the idea that thoughts, emotions, and behaviours are interconnected. Changes in one of these elements can influence the others. For instance, limiting beliefs can impact both your emotions and behaviours in work and life. Conversely, your actions can affect your feelings and thoughts, or your emotional state can guide your actions and thoughts. Using this framework, CBT helps business owners and managers modify their thoughts and behaviours, leading to a more balanced cycle of thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.

A different approach is embraced in acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). While many individuals in the corporate world find CBT to be a valuable approach, some may discover greater benefit from a therapy that focuses more on acceptance rather than changing thoughts.

ACT is based on the understanding that unpleasant emotions and thoughts are normal aspects of our minds. As a result, struggling with these thoughts and emotions and attempting to eliminate them is often futile. Instead, ACT invites people to drop their resistance to these thoughts and emotions, to acknowledge and accept them as part of their experience. While these thoughts and emotions may still arise, they cease to be problematic. ACT teaches clients to manage them skillfully rather than striving to eliminate them.

My approach is personalised to each individual and situation, allowing me to either combine CBT and ACT or use one modality alone. Moreover, I frequently incorporate self-compassion and mindfulness as fundamental practices.

Additionally to these therapies and frameworks, in the treatments I devise, I include knowledge from psychology, neuroscience, and medicine, together with wisdom found in Eastern philosophies such as Buddhism. I also employ coaching principles and techniques.

This synthesis of therapy and coaching principles, scientific knowledge and spiritual wisdom provides you with tools and methods you can apply whenever you need, and also develops a profound sense of connection with the world around you.
